Why Not All Security Cages Are Truly Safe

Rethinking Safety Beyond Theft Protection

When choosing a security cage for HVAC units, heat pumps or outdoor equipment, most buyers focus on one thing: preventing theft and vandalism.
However, an often-overlooked issue remains hidden in plain sight — the size and design of the cage openings themselves.

Many security cages on the market unintentionally introduce finger entrapment risks, particularly for children, creating a health and safety concern that goes far beyond asset protection.

The Hidden Risk: Oversized Openings in Security Cages

A large number of security cages are designed with wide mesh or perforated panels to improve airflow and visibility. While this may benefit ventilation, it can also create openings large enough for children to insert their fingers.

Independent European research shows that children as young as six months old are capable of inserting their fingers into openings, either accidentally or intentionally during exploration. Once a finger enters an aperture of unsuitable dimensions, the risk of entrapment, injury or panic-related harm increases significantly.

Crucially, the absence of intentional behaviour does not eliminate risk. The research confirms that even accidental contact can lead to finger insertion and injury.

What the Research Says About Finger Entrapment

According to the ANEC (European consumer safety body) commissioned study “Requirements for tests of child finger entrapment in European safety standards”, safety risks arise when openings fall within certain dimensional ranges:

Openings between 5 mm and 14.5 mm may allow a child’s finger to enter but not withdraw safely

Children under 5 years old are particularly vulnerable, with finger sizes varying significantly by age and percentile.

Even shallow openings can pose a risk if the aperture width allows finger insertion beyond the first joint.

The report concludes that products with openings accessible to children must be designed to avoid these hazardous dimensions, protecting up to 98% of the child population when appropriate limits are applied.

Security Should Protect People, Not Just Equipment

At Guard-M8, we believe a security cage should do more than prevent theft.

Our cages are engineered with a health and safety–first design philosophy, ensuring protection for:

  • Equipment

  • Installers

  • Maintenance teams

  • Children and vulnerable users

By carefully controlling aperture sizes and panel geometry, our cage designs actively reduce finger entrapment risk while maintaining airflow, visibility and structural strength.

This approach aligns with European safety research and reflects our commitment to responsible product design.
